‘Music is life itself’

Music Vision
At Nook Lane Junior, we believe that music is and should always be for everyone. Our staff are deeply passionate about music and over the 4 years that children learn with us we take every opportunity to develop their own love of music too. Through a rich and varied programme of study, the children explore music through a mixture of listening and appraising, playing, composing, improvising and reading notation. Playfully, we explore the different dimensions of music regularly allowing our children to develop their ear and grow intuitively as musicians. From Bob Marley, to Beethoven children listen to a wide repertoire of music over the years and are encouraged to dance, critique and contemplate how different music resonates with them. A rich history of music is celebrated within this from stories of Stannington’s local carols to those of the Civil Rights movement. Our children grow an appreciation for where music has come from, how it brings us together and how it can change the world.
It is our aim that our children will leave school feeling passionate about music with many fond memories from different musical experiences. All of our children will have had the experience of playing a tuned instrument and will be able to understand the mechanics of how to play it. Through learning an instrument, our children will be able to improvise in the moment and will have had the opportunity to compose. They will able to recognise musical notation, including symbols and rhythms.
We love singing and using our voices at Nook Lane Junior School and enjoy regular singing assemblies, musical workshops and music lessons. We also enjoy taking part in Young Voices - a special celebration of singing at the Sheffield Arena.
We also take great pride in our fantastic school productions. Every year Y3 and Y6 perform a play to the school and our familes - they are a fantastic opportunity for children to express themselves and explore their artistic side.
Music Lessons
As well as the opportunity to learn two musical instruments in our curriculum, we also offer the opportunity for private musical tuition throughout the school day, where children can learn piano, guitar, ukelelee, clarinet or a brass instrument. Please email Heather Morgan, our Music Leader, for more information on lessons.
